This Is The Kit is an English folk music project founded by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kate Stables in Winchester, England, in 2002. Originally conceived as a personal creative outlet, the project encompassed home-recorded music, photography, artwork and other self-published material presented through Stables' website. During its early years, This Is The Kit functioned primarily as a solo project, with Stables writing, recording and releasing material independently while occasionally collaborating with other musicians. As the project developed, its focus gradually shifted towards music and a more stable collaborative line-up emerged. By the late 2000s, This Is The Kit had evolved into a dedicated musical group centered around Stables' songwriting and performances. The project has featured a number of long-term collaborators, including Jesse D. Vernon, Rozi Plain, Neil Smith and Jamie Whitby-Coles, Kate Stables remains its principal songwriter and only constant member. Based for many years in Bristol and later in Paris, This Is The Kit has developed from a largely home-recorded solo endeavor into an internationally active recording and touring band. This Is The Kit has continued to be used not only for the band's recordings and performances but also for Stables' solo appearances as a guest vocalist, songwriter and collaborator on recordings by other artists, reflecting the project's origins as a vehicle for her individual creative work as well as a group identity.
